Wondering if you need a new water heater? That answer can be tricky. With water heaters, sometimes that sign comes with a leak and noise, or it simply stops working. Here are a few red flags that should signal when it’s time to replace your water heater:

Age

A typical life span of a water heater is 8-12 years. If your water heater is at or near that age, start preparing for a new one. Unsure about the age is of your water heater? Find the serial number on the manufacturing label on your water heater and go to the manufacturer’s website to determine the age. A plumber can help you determine the age as well.

Leaks

If there’s a leak or break in your water heater, moisture will be noticeable around its exterior. It’s definitely time to call a plumber to take a look and determine the source of the leak and if it can be repaired.

No hot water

This is a big red flag there might be a problem with your aging water heater. Typically, sediment has set in and is blocking the flow of hot water. Sediment can cause hot water to run out sooner and the tank to become highly inefficient and even cause pressure issues.

Noise

A buildup of sediment will cause rumbling in the tank and, possibly, premature failure.
